  5. This text file provides information you should know about 
  6. this version of Diskeeper.

  8.  
  9. TRIALWARE INFORMATION
  10. =====================
  11.  
  12. 1.  This copy of Diskeeper is a full-featured version with
  13.     all the functionality of the retail product.  The only 
  14.     difference between this and the retail version is that
  15.     this version will expire 30 days after you install it.
  16.  
  17. 2.  For information about purchasing Diskeeper, including volume 
  18.     discounts, contact your reseller, or contact Executive Software

  24. PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED

  27. This version of Diskeeper is supported on Intel x86 platforms 
  28. running Windows NT 4.0 builds 1381 and higher.

  31. CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE
  32. =======================
  33.  
  34. 1.  This version of Diskeeper introduces the Boot-Time Directory 
  35.     Consolidation feature.  This allows Diskeeper to defragment 
  36.     and consolidate directories -- objects that cannot be defragmented 
  37.     in an on-line mode.
  38.  
  39. 2.  The Windows NT Server version of Diskeeper can now be installed
  40.     on Windows NT Workstations. 
  41.  
  42. 3.  This version of Diskeeper introduces greatly enhanced scheduling
  43.     capabilities.  You can now:
  44.  
  45.     o Set schedules for more than one partition at a time
  46.     o Set a single schedule for all the partitions on one or
  47.       more computers on your network (Server version only)
  48.     
  49. 4.  The text analysis display has been revised.  It is now displayed 
  50.     as a separate window with enhanced display controls.
  51.  
  52. 5.  The Diskeeper Event Logging options have been expanded.  You can 
  53.     now log this information:
  54.  
  55.     o Service Start and Stop
  56.     o Defrag Start and Stop
  57.     o Number of Files Defragmented
  58.     o Number of Eliminated Fragments
  59.     o Disk Information
  60.     o File Information
  61.     o Directory Information

  66. KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES IN THIS RELEASE
  67. =======================================
  68.  
  69. 1.  Diskeeper for Windows NT is not compatible with systems 
  70.     using the DPT Smart Cache III controller, unless Service 
  71.     Pack 1, 2 or 3 for Windows NT 4.0  has been installed.  Do 
  72.     not run Diskeeper on systems using the DPT Smart Cache 
  73.     III controller until you install Service Pack 1, 2 or 3 on 
  74.     your Windows NT system.
  75.  
  76. 2.  On rare occasions, especially when running Diskeeper in 
  77.     the Set It and Forget It mode, a Dr. Watson "Error 87" 
  78.     message may be displayed.  This message can be disregarded 
  79.     and is no cause for alarm.  We believe this is caused by
  80.     an error which Diskeeper is handling internally but which
  81.     Dr. Watson also attempts to handle.
  82.  
  83. 3.  The on-screen Diskeeper Boot-time Directory Consolidation 
  84.     progress information cannot be viewed on your monitor if 
  85.     you are using a Diamond Stealth Viper video card or any 
  86.     other video card that does not support Windows NT boot-time 
  87.     display.  You can still, however, record a summary file 
  88.     during the Boot-Time Directory Consolidation.  See the 
  89.     Diskeeper Help system for more information on the Boot-Time 
  90.     Summary File.

  93. KNOWN RESTRICTIONS IN THIS RELEASE
  94. ==================================
  95.  
  96. 1.  At times, the View menu Refresh option to update the tree view of 
  97.     the network computers may not reflect the current network.  This 
  98.     is due to network communication limitations in Windows NT.
  99.  
  100. 2.  You cannot use the Network Scheduler to schedule defragmentation on 
  101.     a computer to which you are currently connected.  Use the Drive 
  102.     Scheduler option to schedule defragmentation of partitions on the 
  103.     machine you are connected to -- the Network Scheduler option to 
  104.     schedule machines you are not connected to.
  105.  
  106.     This means you must be connected to a machine other than your local
  107.     computer (by clicking on a remote computer in the Diskeeper network 
  108.     tree view display) if you want to use the Network Scheduler to 
  109.     schedule your local computer.
  110.  
  111. 3.  Due to Windows NT security issues, it is necessary for you to have 
  112.     Administrator privileges on both the local machine and any remote
  113.     computers upon which you set Diskeeper schedules.  Your account on 
  114.     the remote computer must also have the same password as your account
  115.     on the local machine.
  116.  
  117. 4.  If a remote computer is shut down while Diskeeper Server is connected 
  118.     to that computer, you will be unable to re-connect Diskeeper to any other 
  119.     computers, including your local computer.  It may be necessary in such
  120.     circumstances to use the Windows NT Task Manager to end the Diskeeper
  121.     task.  After doing this, Diskeeper will operate properly.

  124. REQUIRED PRIVILEGES
  125. ===================
  126.  
  127. You must have Administrator privileges to install and operate Diskeeper.
  128.  
  129.  
  130. INSTALLING DISKEEPER 
  131. ====================
  132.  
  133. Follow these steps to install Diskeeper:
  134.  
  135. 1.  From Windows NT Explorer or File Manager, double click on
  136.     SETUP.EXE in the directory where this text file resides.
  137.  
  138. 2.  Read the information displayed in the Setup Installation 
  139.     Wizard boxes and click the "Next" button as appropriate.
  140.  
  141. 3.  In the "Choose Destination Location" dialog box, either 
  142.     accept the default installation location, or click the 
  143.     "Browse" button to specify a different disk and/or 
  144.     directory.  If you specify a directory that does not exist, 
  145.     the setup program will create it for you.  Click the 
  146.     "Next" button after specifying a disk and directory, or to 
  147.     accept the default installation location.

  149. 4.  The installation offers you the opportunity to register
  150.     Diskeeper on Executive Software's Web Site.  
  151.  
  152. 5.  After a short period of copying files, the installation is 
  153.     complete.

  157. UNINSTALLING DISKEEPER
  158. ======================
  159.  
  160. Follow these steps to remove Diskeeper from your computer:
  161.  
  162. 1.  From Control Panel, double click "Add/Remove Programs".
  163.  
  164. 2.  Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab.
  165.  
  166. 3.  Highlight "Diskeeper".
  167.  
  168. 4.  Click the "Add/Remove" button.  This removes the 
  169.     Diskeeper program files from your computer.
  170.  
  171. 5.  It may be necessary to manually delete the Diskeeper 
  172.     installation directory.
